Smash Lab Sucks

For those of you that sat through this pitiful excuse of a show, you have my condolences. There was a time when I thought the Discovery Channel could do no wrong. Dirty Jobs, How Stuff is Made, Blue Planet, Planet Earth, Survivorman, and the still brilliant Mythbusters have all made their permanent mark on television. These are the true reality TV shows; shows that make science fun and interesting for the masses yet maintain just enough of the scientific method to peak the interest of real life engineers and scientists. Adam and Jamie generally provide a sound scientific foundation for their experiments, when they do not, they hear about it from the legion of Mythbusters fanboys and then do there best to revisit it in a further episode.
The Mythbuster crew, Jamie, Adam, Tory, Grant, and Kari have fantastic personalities and the synergy amongst the team is remarkable. Mythbusters was like catching lightening in a bottle. The perfect show, perfect cast, at the perfect time.

It is almost insulting that the good people at Discovery would then force feed us "Smash Lab". SL is a blatant copy of mythbusters, without the style and solid scientific foundation. Instead of promoting thought and conversation SL comes with big explosions and ... well that is it. Just explosions. We live in an age of copycat shows, for every Bachelor we have a Joe Millionaire, for every Wife Swap we have Trading Spouses. Each Xerox lacks the luster of the original. Sadly Discovery chooses to duplicate rather than innovate. And speaking of product placement, I think the true star of SL has to be Rhino Liner? What a wonderous product? SL must have just discovered it right? Wrong, Rhino Liner is a polyurethane coating, it has already been looked at for blast protection, in many scientific studies and there are commercial products available that outperform Rhino liner (http://www.securitycoatings.com/whatis.htm)
for the particular need. Curious? Google polyurethane and blast protection and check out all the hits. Combining compression resistant materials and elastic materials is not new either, just look at fiberglass, composite materials are being used everywhere around us.

Smash Lab's cast is uninteresting and unexperienced as well. These four college dropouts should not share the same airwaves as Jamie and Adam. I found their titles hilarious. Scientist, Idea guy, engineer, and design person (was it?). How completely ridiculous! Lets let the butcher, the baker, and candlestick maker produce a show I have no doubt it will be better.

Viewers do not give the Discovery Channel reason to play another episode of Smash Lab. Turn off you TV, or watch a recorded episode of MythBusters, it will be a far better use of your time.

Discovery Channel, I expected better, you spent a lot of money for a couple explosions and no substance and call it science. This show will only be of interest to teenage pyromaniacs, who could simply watch Diehard reruns and get their fix. I believe you are alienating your core audience with a poorly executed copy of your flagship show.

LOL, I saw the promos for it and was immediately disinterested. Methinks The Discovery Channel needs to try harder and aim higher.

I couldn't agree with you more. (In fact, I found this page by Googling "Smash Lab sucks" to see what I'd come up with.) I actually just sent this note to Discovery about the show:

I will venture a guess that my e-mail is not the first you have received regarding Discovery's abysmal new show "Smash Lab." I am sure that it will also not be your last. We'll ignore for the moment the TV worthiness of the cast. After all, anyone can be on TV these days. What is far more troubling is the gross insult to science that this show presents, a fact that should immediately send this one to the pits. No one involved in this show appears to have even the most basic understanding of fundamental scientific principles or methods. It is also laughable to call the female presenter a "scientist" simply because she has a recently earned bachelor's degree in engineering. If you are concerned about the underrepresentation of women in scientific fields, the answer is not to put a pretty but incompetent woman in front of the camera and call her a scientist. This show is something I would call "destruction porn"; you fast-forward through the ridiculous dialogue in order to get to the graphic parts. Well, I would if I intended to watch it again.

I can understand the desire to clone the success of "MythBusters." But Discovery needs to carefully consider just why that show works. "MythBusters" may not be science at its most rigorous, but it is at least true to the spirit of experimentation that helped make science what it is today. Also, Adam and Jamie actually know what they are doing.

There is too much garbage on television these days. Don't add to it.

I caught the concrete show on my tivo. I canceled the season pass to it about 15 min into the program. What an terrible show. I too agree that the people who are on the show are merely the "presenters" and don't have any thing to add to the show except to be "edgy and hip", which they totally lack.

I too found this site by typing in smashlab sucks. Funny how we all think alike when it comes to this gawd awful show.

It truly is destruction pr0n. How many times do I need to see in slow mo a stupid ass collision that has no utter scientific info about it?

The most idiotic thing is that in this particular show when the small car completely drove though it at high speed they decided to switch to a city bus to try and get the concrete to fail. When it was clear the concrete wasn't going to slow down the bus and and was going to the side the stunt man clearly put on the breaks and the "science gurl" was claiming that "did you see how the concrete worked and slowed down the vehicle?" WTF! The only thing they got "right" in the whole show is when at the end they claimed they failed at their so called "challenge". Like this "theory" needed a challenge anyway. They already have barriers to block people from going through the medians, but they don't have them everywhere because its cost prohibitive and people don't want to pay taxes for something that only happends every so often. Its better to pay for cops and awareness for drunk drivers and have stiff penalties when caught.

Oh well at least I won't ever have to watch this abortion of a program again. I just hope they cancel it and put something more worth while on.

My take on the show.... Two older dudes with "Something About Mary" hairdo's and a young guy and girl who only have dorm room appeal. Oh yeah, and science that a 4th grader could figure out if he/she had the budget to do so.

I too Googled "Smash Lab Sucks" because I knew some bloggers would already be on it. I just caught the clip with the girl explaining the results of the car wreck...

"You can see, the BMW took the brunt of it because it's bent like this! It got hit and went like this then hit the other car and went like this..."

Lame. I'm wondering what the Mythbusters crew feels like! I'd be pretty cheesed if my own network ripped off my show.

I posted this on another forum, then found this one.

I feel the need to critique.

I don't understand the basis for this show, the episode I caught last night was a train wreck.

First I'll start off with, I'm a HUGE Mythbusters fan. When I saw the previews for Smash Lab, I was expecting a similar show.. Science based, a little humor, some action. All I got was a big steamy pile of dog crap.

The cast seemed fake, un-interesting, poorly trained, and for the most part.. "dumb". They weren't very likable, or very descript for that matter. I couldn't tell if they were supposed to be special effects people, science people, teachers, actors or what.

The set: Looks like the show was filmed all over the place, which is GREAT that they did a lot of "on location" stuff, but as a Mythbusters fan, I felt a little offended when they tried to pass off the "movie set" for a lab, one time during the episode particularly stood out was when they bit the MB's "scale test" scenario for the highway crash barrier test. They tried to make it seem like they were in an equipped shop, when it was a set filled with plastic bins, one had precut pieces of Styrofoam, the other had a brick and some matchbox cars. Now, if you're going to set up a scale test, let it be a test. This wasn't a test, it was a "demo".

The meat and potato's: There was NO SCIENCE to this show, it was a bunch of dumb asses trying out crack pot theories in full scale.

The show was about highway accidents, people falling asleep and crossing the center line. They never quite told us if they were out to make a better barrier, or what, but they showed footage of a commercial jet sinking into aerated concrete.

In the beginning they crashed a car into a pile of old cars on a runway at a 30 degree angle to "gauge the damage". They did it ala-mythbusters, with accellerometers, and high speed camera's.. Looked promising.

Then they tested crashing a car, with MUCH different physical properties into a concrete barrier, protected with their test slab or aerated concrete. The part that pissed me off was they kept referring to their "Scientific methods", and they compared the accelerometers results to the first crash (into OTHER CARS, not concrete) which they kept calling their "baseline".

Although this show had a decent looking girl (who had nothing intelligent to say). And a bunch of poorly executed car wrecks in it, it was a SLAP in the face to a mildly-educated viewer. It's a crappy attempt to take the best of the Mythbusters and put it into a show not about "Myths" but about physical science. Don't piss on my head and tell me it's raining. Cut all the pseudo-science, and big words, and just say "we're going to crash a bunch of shit into a bunch of other shit".

This show is a piece of crap.

Hahaha, I ALSO found this by googling "Smash Lab Sucks"!

Putting aside the obvious deficits in scientific method or ...thought for that matter, I have to say, the cast was so unbelievably boring, I could hardly sit through it. Adam and Jamie are fun. Not their tests. I mean, okay for some people, I guess the mere act of testing is fun, but Adam and Jamie are packed with personality and wit. These Smash Lab guys made me want to poke my eyes out with a spork....better luck in the future, men...and token hot chick.

Unknown said...

You like, wrote down my thoughts. I can't agree with that more.
I googled Smash Lab sucks too, I hope that discovery cancels that shit.
I tried to find a contact link on discovery's site, to complain about how much it sucks, but no, none there.

Smash Lab totally blows. My roommate and I (a nuclear and mechanical engineer) both laugh our asses off at every show we watch. Did you see the barn they built on the "hurricane episode"? There wasn't even diagonal bracing attached to the struts in the wall! Even our 900$ barn at home has these. What a pathetic excuse for "scientists". I hope they cancel this show before the season even finishes and run reruns of Mike Rowe on Dirty Jobs or more Mythbusters (did you see where Mike Rowe came up with the MikeRowechip? Hilarious!)

Add me to the list of people who Googled "Smash Lab Sucks."

I learned this during the car barrier episode.

Somehow the girl felt that 150 ft of an awful cement mixture was a realistic way to stop a car going out of control on the streets. Even though the car still has to apply it's own breaks, which renders that cement runway pointless.

The whole premise of that show was pointless, since NASCAR has already designed the "SAFER Barrier." Which actually had a lot of research and testing, compared to this episodes 4 trials.

http://www.sciencecoalition.org/universityresearch.cfm?page=4

I wish I could actually learn something on television these days.

Unknown said...

Stick another name on the "Googled 'Smash Lab sucks'" list. I watched the hurricane proofing episode and was highly disappointed. Especially of the fact they were using very expensive carbon fiber fabric to cover a mobile home. The point of a mobile home is to be cheap.
But even more disappointing, I gave it another chance and caught the rerun of the car crash episode, and I think all my thoughts have already been said here. Discovery is throwing WAY too much money into this show and its a flop.
This show has to be canceled!

Unknown said...

I too found this page by doing a google on "Smash lab sucks!". Just watched the episode where they attempt to stop a car and then a bus with special cement. Is it me or is that really silly they been doing the same thing with simple sand traps for years in the mountains, and it works allot better and its cheaper. Dumb SHOW! They should of brought bad junk yard wars or something.

Unknown said...

I thought it was going to be a "scientific" show where I might actually learn something, but after watching the concrete show and saying out loud, "This Sucks!", I decided to give it another chance on the carbon fiber episode....

about 20 mins into that episode, I decided to do what any reasonable, educated human with an internet connection would do... Google "smash lab sucks" !

Here I am! Count me in.

Kill this show!!

I agree that it may be the worst thing to ever appear on tv. If Discovery Channel wants to feed us garbage like this they could have at least put four bikini models jumping around acting like idiots.

i cant believe so many people googled "smash lab sucks" like i did. I also got through about 10 minutes of the concrete show and was incredibly disappointed with the lack of anything useful in this show. Not only are the experiments poorly executed, much of what they said is actually incorrect.

I feel bad watching this show on the same tv as other great shows from the Discovery Channel.

Why would you devalue and demean the only truly science-based/exerimented show in the U.S.?

Worst yet, the feminine element made me and probably made America say "I was looking for Carrie, and we get this?" Have you seen Carrie's video? Um, kinda HOT!

America, your viewing program has been reduced to diluted OOOH/AHH with no substance.

I am very disappointed and am complaining to Discovery, since you guys are too cheap to have your own website.

I found your website on google as "SmashLab Sucks". Hope this trend picks up!

google Downey Studios to find this for yourself. Sad.

Building 1 ~ 50,000 Sq. Ft. High Bay

Dimensions; 450'x120'
Concrete Floor, 48' - 62' Ceiling Height, 35' High Entry Doors
1600 Amps of 480 Voltage, Two Story Office Space, T-1 Voice and Data Communications Throughout the building.

Right here in the space of the building. the first four Space Shuttles were built here and you can film your TV, commercials and movies right here where history was made.

I agree. I hope this isn't some lame attempt to try to replace MythBusters. I don't see how the Smash Lab hosts can take themselves seriously. Jamie and Adam did something original and deserve the credit for it. Just remaking the exact same show with different hosts is lame. They are trying to make a formula out of it but they missed the most significant variables, Jamie and Adam...

Wow. Add yet another "Smash Lab Sucks" in Google. Good to know i'm not the only one that thinks this show is a pathetic piece of crap.

The girl in the show is the WORST. All of her explanations and "theories" are animated with hand and body gestures - just short of a seizure.

Someone mentioned this earlier... "You can see, the BMW took the brunt of it because it's bent like this! It got hit and went like this then hit the other car and went like this..." (token science chick)

While she throws around her arms to describe the destruction. LOL what a FAILURE!

phishician said...

I have to say that I disagree with you guys on one thing...
Of course I agree that Smash Lab sucks, but I have to say I think it's absolutely ingenius. Before you get upset, hear me out.
Almost all the posts I've read on this site have something in common - they compare this show to Mythbusters. I don't think the Discovery channel failed with Smash Lab, I think they had a resounding success. It's just that the goal that they had in mind was a little different than what we think.
Think about what was going through your mind when you watched Smash Lab... Something like, "Man this show sucks." But that's only due to comparison, in my opinion. When you tough your way through an episode of poor science, horrible hosts, and thinly-veiled explosion happy machismo known as Smash Lab, you start to make comparisons in your head. And what do you compare it to? The show it ripped off, of course!
You quickly become bothered by the faux-hip, overly-caffeinated, arrogant, condescending demeanor of the hosts, and you compare them to how much you like Adam and Jamie's lack of fear at being labeled as geeks or nerds. It makes you miss the Mythbusters' charm.
You compare Smash Lab's total lack of indivuality to the unique chemistry of the Mythbusters - Adam's goofiness contrasted by Jamie's somewhat Anal-Retentive nature.
You see the building in which Smash Lab conducts their "experiments," the ease at which they find the materials and tools they need, and it strikes you that, "Hey, this is a movie set! It's fake! It's all set up to look like a lab, but it's just a big crock!" Then you start to think about how much more you like M5, the geniune things the Mythbusters build and the real-life problems they run into when building them.
I could go on, but I think you're starting to get the picture. When you catch even a bit of an episode of Smash Lab, the one thing that's really in your mind is, "This show blows. When is Mythbusters on?"
That, my friends, I argue is the true goal of the Discovery channel. They ingeniusly created an hour long commercial for Mythbusters, by showing you just how bad it could be if it wasn't for Adam, Jamie, Tory, Kari, and Grant. Speaking of that, I wonder what the Mythbusters would have to say about Smash Lab...
It's like wearing a friend's pants that are way too tight in all the wrong places - it makes you appreciate what you have so much more.
Way to go Discovery, you've succeeded again!
Thanks for reading, friends,
Tuck
PS - Just kidding. Smash Lab sucks, Discovery failed. Though it's hard to believe that the channel that brought us Mythbusters, Blue Planet, Planet Earth, etc, would think they could shove shit like that down our throats.

Unknown said...

No comparison between mythbusters and this show. I had the same experience with the premiere that others have written about already. Cancelled the season pass almost immediately. The thought that struck me the most was, "This is their premiere episode... the one that's supposed to lure me in for the season???" You have got to be kidding me.

And blowing stuff up as if we hadn't already seen it done countless times on MB. ZZZZZZZzzzzzzzz

Add another tally to the found this by googling: "Smash Lab Sucks".
I wrote my first letter to a network.

My letter to discovery. I'll post a response if I get one.
Dear Discovery:
I Love discovery channel. I love most of the shows. Even those I don't love I enjoy.

Except Smash Lab.

I don't know who your target audience is, but this show is terrible across the board. The science is terrible, the personalities shallow and uninteresting, and the topics or "challenges" trite. The three episodes I have watched focused on problems solved already, in ways similar to the solutions put forth in industry with little planning or thinking through the design.

This could be an interesting show, but I suggest doing the following...
1. Fire the cast and hire 2 people for "color" commentary, and 2 people for "Expert Opinion."
2. Post a season's worth of "Challenges" on your web site and encourage viewers to submit their solutions via video. Heck have Mike Rowe plead for "Challenges" like he begs for new "Dirty Jobs".
3. Have some of your "crack" production staff evaluate the solution videos presented for science, entertainment, and feasibility.
4. Produce(Bankroll) the viewer presented solutions and somehow work the viewer into the show / segment. IDK maybe becoming the 5th member of the team for the episode.

Thanks for bringing quality, educational, and entertaining shows to television. Unfortunately Smash Lab doesn't do it for me. I hope you are hitting the Nielsen numbers you set out to with it. But I doubt you are, and I expect to see it canceled after it's run however many episodes you signed for already.

That's hilarious! I, too, Googled for "Smash Lab Sucks" and found this site. I knew there would other like-minded thinkers out there.

First off, it irks me to no end how nearly every idea they come up with and test they run through FAILS horribly. Having 10 foot thick blocks of aerated concrete is a terrible idea! Secondly, the girl also irks me to no end. She obviously doesn't know what she's talking about, but she still talks. Plus something about the way she is so animated confuses me.

I am normally not one to find a blog and a post a comment about whatever, but this show is just silly.

well i think EVERY SINGLE post above speaks for me. This show is horrible. Not only is it a copy of Mythbusters, but the cast, and the "experiments" are worthless. Most important they are impractical, lame, and something my four year old son could/would think of (like he watches on sesame street).. what an insult to my "geniusness”

FAIL FAIL FAIL FAIL FAIL FAIL FAIL FAIL FAIL

Smash Labs is an affront to the intelligence of Discovery Channel viewers. I admit that I had a lot of hope for this one in the beginning...it has all the trappings of good TV. But the execution is epically disastrous! We've just canceled our Tivo season pass after the train airbag episode.

This weak combination of "Queer Eye" rejects, sad challenges, shady "designs" and laughable pseudo-science quickly deflates...much like the train airbag in the last episode of this sorry excuse for a show that will ever grace my TV screen.

Discovery, enough is enough. You tried it, the people have spoken. Hey, they can't all be winners. This one stinks. Please cut these fools off and go fund something worthy of your good name.

Unknown said...

Discovery is listening. They want your ideas on how to improve the show. So I guess if you have creative suggestions, head on over here and let 'er rip.

I still say just pull the plug and fund someone with an original idea. There are too many creative filmmakers and producers out there to be dumping money into this sad sad BS.

Well I'm here for the same reason as everyone else. This show is entertaining for no other reason than it's fun to watch the bumbling bad ideas poorly executed by the unqualified. I kinda feel sorry for them really in a way.

I have to disagree with "How It's Made" being a good show. It's 22 minutes of what may as well be stock footage. No narrative, no story, I would almost rather watch a security camera. It is truly the worst time filler on all of Discovery's networks.

Chris said...

I'll be different here, I found this post via reddit. I then googled "smash lab sucks" since I felt left out :(

I agree 100%. I watched the first episode when the sneak showing aired before new years. It didn't look all that amazing from the commercials, but I'd give it a shot. Plus, part of why it didn't look all that interesting could very well be because it's their first season. First season MythBusters was excellent, but as the seasons went on they seemed to get the hang of things and develop the wonderful dynamic they have now...maybe Smash Lab just needed time to develop?

Nope. I watched the first episode and thought it was horrible. I really don't see any potential there, since potential needs something there to build on. The hosts suck and there's no dynamic between them. Not more than a few minutes into the first episode of MythBusters I saw I knew who both the hosts were and had an idea of what kind of experience they brought to the show...with Smash Lab, even after watching a couple episodes, I haven't a freakin clue who these people are. What do they bring to the show, what are their expertise, why should I care about them or listen to their opinions, why won't they stop screaming? There's no dynamic between them, and honestly, other than the token girl on the team, I get all of the hosts completely mixed up. All the guys seem the same, and if whats-her-name didn't look as cute as she does (until she speaks), I'd get her mixed up with the guys as well...

Ugh. Cancel this...

We have a certain discipline called mathematics that allows real scientists and engineers to model an experiment before executing it. No need to drop a car on a moonwalk without determining how much air MUST be released upon impact. A high school student could figure out if this would work on paper.

Another thing... where are the controls in the experiment? I have subjected myself to two episodes and cringe at the total disregard for the scientific method.

Ha... was going to post this on their site but typed in Smash Lab Sucks in Google and got here.

Wow, i feel like were all on the same wave length, because i searched for smash smash lab sucks on google too, its a popular thing to do i guess. The people on this show are just too dumb, they don't even innovate at all, their brains are stuck inside the box. On the rhino liner show they totally could have used bullet proof glass for the windows, but they chose to putts around trying to "bomb proof" a window with an opaque bed liner! Talk about useless, and they messed around with trying to inflate the train "air bag" at just the right moment... Hello? Don't they realize that the only reason a car airbag needs to deploy during an accident is because during normal car usage, you don't want a big puff ball obstructing your movement!? A train could just have it constantly deployed. And at the end of the show, after a million stupid mistakes and failed attempts, they just shrugged their shoulders and gave up. Yep smash lab sucks.

If you are going to show an impact...Show The Farking Impact...then you can repeat 25 times in slo-mo from different angles. And the 'music' as it were, was intrusive to an amazing amount.

Come to think of it, the music on Animal Precint (also a Discovery Channel product) has also become more intrusive this season.

Wonder which executive producer needs his ears cleared, and a high colonic while we're at it.

The only thing different between me and every other person here is, I yahoo-ed "smash lab sucks", not googled...

I was repelled by the show from the very first promo. What mythbusters wrap up in the last five munites for 'fun', is what smash lab stretchs for a painful long passing on as 'the show'. wikipedia states that Jamie hired Adam because he was concerned that he himself would be too uninteresting of a presenter. Well Jamie, worry no more. These guys make you look like Billy Crystal at the oscars.

I don't care if the show survives or not. But I know for sure I haven't watched a complete episode, and I'm not about to ruin my 'streak'.

I loved the concrete stuff. Yeah, it works to stop planes when the runway runs out, but that's the point. You wouldn't use that crap ON THE RUNWAY or on a road! You use it where cars aren't supposed to go.

Gigantic barriers of it or entire roads of it is insane!

Just keeping the thread going. What a sorry excuse for a show. The guys are tools and the girl reminds me of when star search would have the "spokesmodel" competition.

Weak!

I assume Discovery will see the error in its ways.

I was offended by the premise and execution of this chaos of a thng call show. They use the words smash and lab to attract people in collisional science. To trust these "fo-sho" scienTESTs with making the world a safer place? I wouldn't give their troubles to a monkey on a rock.

Another "Smashlab sucks" googler here. I have to agree with everyone else, this show is a poor rip-off of Mythbusters. Mythbusters is rarely perfect, and there are many times I disagree with their methods and sometimes that I disagree with their conclusions, but never have I felt that something they did was simply IDIOTIC.

The first episode I watched was the "carbon fabric" one. First of all, the fact that they don't call it carbon fiber pretty clearly indicates that they're not even using the correct process (and they even documented it, they just slathered resin on the fiber material and completely skipped the vacuum process). What they did was little better than just using fiberglass. And their use of weight distribution was obviously the main cause of carbon "fabric"less 2x4 to break. Ultimately the biggest downfall of the episode was that the whole thing was based on a stupid concept. Who the hell would reinforce a $15,000 trailer home with $20,000 of carbon fiber and internal/external support structures? IT HAS NO APPLICATION IN REAL LIFE. Oh, and their 2x4 throwing machine used completely different angles when shooting at the unprotected vs protected homes. There are just so many horrible flaws in every aspect of this show.

Don't even get me started about the train "airbag" episode.

Oh, and the personalities suck.

The music is overly dramatic.

This show sucks. Discovery needs to take the money they're using on it (which is obviously a lot) and give it to Mythbusters. I'm not a fanboy, I just have a brain.

LOL....I just googled Smash Lab Sucks also.
The show looks so scripted. The girl sounds like she is reading a script.
Horrible. Such a disappointment.

I also googled "smash lab sucks".

It's like watching a circle jerk of airheads who are blatantly trying to copy MythBusters. The chick is obnoxious with the over gesticulation and the guys are just as bad. They just agree with each other and use general terminology with very sparsely scattered scientific vocabulary. They obviously don't know shit about what they're doing.

What an insult to MythBusters. I'd love to hear what Adam and Jamie have to say about this turd of a show.

Mike said...

Dear Discovery Channel,

Why are you destroying my Sunday with a Smash Lab Marathon. I would usually rely on Discovery Channel for something entertaining to watch when there's no sports running on TV.

Now you're mentally torturing your loyal viewers with this joke of a show. I feel like you guys are trying to do spinoff of Mythbusters with the rejected cast of Jackass. These people are ridiculously incompetent to say the lease.

How many years of experience do they have all together? If your answer is that they watched all episodes of Mythbusters, I would say you're following the footstep of the Food Network.

I used to watch the Food Network because they got the original Iron Chef and The Cook's Tour. They now just want to apply for the commercial appeal by having a lot Rachel Ray related programs. You can sell more adspace by telling the corporations that this show is just like the hot show Mythbusters.

I thanked you.

Funny so many people are turned off by this...what was DC thinking MB is a hit...why bring on a show with the same premise, minus the personality? This is so cool. I also googled "Smash Lab sucks" and I am so happy to have found this.

This show has no appeal. I have no idea what they are doing, the hosts have no personality, plus the show itself is filmed with that annoying handheld cam thing with too many over the shoulder shots. And DC pumps out the ads for this show like the network is desperate for ratings.

I hope they cancel show this very soon.

I found this page by googling "smash lab horrible". This show is totally crap. Everything to them is a success! They must have got that from their professors at Devry or whatever bozo college they must have gotten their credentials from.. although I suspect their engineer and scientists very likely failed high school physics and never made it past that!

jwr5184 said...

I just finished watching the "fire proof house." My father and I, both firefighters, laughed at this joke of a show, you know its pretty bad when the previews consist of the house burning to the ground. That house was not even up to code! and the properties used in the carbon fiber/aerogel cover were impracticle. Not to mention the hosts are bumbling baffons, who dont have the slighest clue to what is happining. For example, The quote of the night is: "well, the hydrolic pistons are bowing outward, but it still seams fine..." that my friends, proves my point. I hope that their "Fire Prevention System" is never implimented, for it is a hazard to the structure, and those asembling it, and just makes it harder for us to come and save them. I hope that this is replaced with more mythbusters, so I can watch quality TV. In fact I need to TiVo some mythbusters now, as i feel the knoledge draining from my head, as i watch this heniously stupid exstupid showcuse for a show.

Not much more to elaborate, it's all pretty well been said. I too searched "Smash Lab Sucks" and found this thread. I DVR many Discovery shows (MythBusters, Survivorman, Dirty Jobs) and had been excited about the new show "Smash Lab". What a waste.

The best thing about the show before it ever aired was the previews. After watching, the best thing is the conformation I'm asked at the end of the segment, "Would you like to delete this recording?". "YES".

I actually tuned in for the first episode months ago, but could only take it for 10 minutes. Tonight I saw ads for the rocket brake episode while watching the Mythbuster's Mentos rerun. The rockets got my attention enough to watch the show when it came on, but of course it was just awful. They kept setting off the rockets prematurely, and nearly killing some of the cast members. From this they concluded that rockets are just too unreliable for anything. It couldn't have possibly been the incompetence of the crew? What an anticlimax! I figured that a show with rockets had to be somewhat entertaining. But these boobs couldn't get them to work as anything more than very expensive smoke bombs. And I'm pretty sure that solid rockets aren't fired using a "detonator", as they kept saying. And the retrorockets attached to the wheel looked like something Wile E Coyote would use. Are they serious? Stupid hipsters!

Yeah, Smashlab is horrible.
They say they are doing it for safety in vehicles BUT we all know none of it will be put into production,

njbillt said...

The rocket show was the worst. I don't think the trailer was supposed to get wrecked in the beginning of the show, and they had to fill it with experiments that a 3rd grader could have figured out. You can't stop 3 tons of inertia with a couple of model rocket motors producing a few hundred pounds of braking. And they never even mentioned the theory they were testing has been done to death on jet airplanes. it's called reverse thrust!! I found this by Googling Smashlab stupid show, but yeah, it sucks too.

Seems like I am not the first to google "smash lab sucks". What trash. No scientific method, usually covering something the Mythebusters did long ago - with much less skill, innovation and entrertainment. What? No Hi-speed camera?

They blow down a shed with some fans, then wrap a mobile home in some paper? How is that repeating an experiment? Why not just wrap another shed and try again? Or put the shed behind the plane? Once again - myhtbusters already destroyed stuff using this method - only they did it far better.

Get this crap off of my TV, please. Discovery Channel - hear our cries for help. And while you are at it - take off Invention Nation (I'm not even sure that is Discovery's show...) since it is another stupid show trying to tell us about science for no apparent reason, and telling it badly - while apparently catering to 4 year olds?

Yikes!

Loved the show with the rockets! I was hoping that finally they would all be incinerated but instead they just failed to stop the very heavy truck and trailer (no wait, it did blow up).
I have not watched every episode (thankfully. I think that's why I can still read and write) but have they ever succeeded in anything they have attempted so far?

Tonight they built an enormous sand pit to stop robbers. I think that one succeeded and it was their first. Problem was that it is the dumbest most impractical thing I have seen since Hughes' "Spruce Goose". At least the darn thing flew once.

Did anyone else see the CO2 Cop Car?? Stupid. It was hilarious how the idiotic and mornic hosts came up with such retarded ideas!!
Look, if you're gonna do something, do it right.

First of all, they were testing it with a car thats probably older than I am. If they had tested a newer car, or done basic research, they would've figured out that a lot of cars don't have air intake valves in the front of the car! They're usually by the wheels.

Secondly, the robotic arm was plain stupid. remember K.I.S.S. People!!! They should've put multiple Co2 tanks in the back, then fired them all!! Not try to aim a tiny tube at a car that possibly has dangerous criminals with weapons!
And did anyone else see the retarded magnetic fire extinguisher??? LOL!!

Finally, its already been done!! And much much better!!! There are several smarter simpler and easier designs out there!!

Then the fact that they failed and didn't even try to re-do it or improve on it!!! WHAT A WASTE OF AN HOUR!!!

Then, in true mythbusters fashion, the Ideas Guy encourages people to log onto their website and give them ideas... Heres an idea- STOP RIPPING OFF MYTHBUSTERS AND DO SOME RESEARCH!!!

Go to www.Google.com and research something you want to do before you do it!!!
Rant over.

I too, googled "Smash Lab Sucks" and came to this page. I have never seen a copy showed be so poor. I agree completly with everything you've stated in your blog, about the cast, the ideas, and the show itself. To add to it, the one episode, I happened to turn on, (which by the way, my guide said was Mythbusters...the reason I turned it on in the first place) they were trying to crash a boat, and they're trigger failed. And on there one commerical there was that explosion that turned into "WERE THEY STILL IN THE TRUCK?" I mean, come one. I have yet to see that episode, nor do I wish, but it just, in my opinion, proves the failure of the cast. Adam and Jamie rarely make mistakes as you stated.

I just can't stand this show, at all.

That was a hard one to figure out.At the end they ended up flipping the car on the roof, and did more damage..ANyone wit a big budget could do this show,it all comes down to trying, without slightest use of scientific or engineering principles. And their titles are indeed funny, scientist??I am never watching this show again.

i haven't seen a single experiment go right, till now. and whenever it goes wrong, you'd either hear (1) whoo hoo hoo what an explosion, or else (2) i think that went well, it was a success.

i'm watching this episode 'long range life boat' right now, (need some heat for ranting here), before they can even drop this life boat for their test, their object release mechanism fails. (what an embarrasment).

they try again, their design fins for keeping the boat at level drop angle doesn't make any difference and the boat drops on its side. the boat doesnt sink or break into pieces so they check their accelerometer readings.

they find out its 15 Gs, the Moe says "Thats not survivable!", nonetheless, the Curls sums the experiement as "I think we have proved that it is possible to deploy a lifeboat from the air with a crew, this will be the future of sea rescue." The narrator says before the show ends, "This experiment was a huge success."

There goes.

okay so I totally agree with what everyone is saying.
Let me start off by saying this show is a rip of Mythbusters BIG TIME
I'm watching the episode on how they are putting Air bags on a train to stop it from killing the person it hits. okay first off wtf? who is seriously going to put air bags on a train if this is even successful and if you noticed all of the experiments they do that actually work. The are just plain out ridiculous period. No one will ever use them like the whole "Hey let me stick huge 7 foot bars coming out the edge of a car to stop it from falling over on its side. Oh jesus, what are they thinking? No one would ever purchase are car like. And it's funny..cause the only way they solve their challenges* are with stupid out of the ordinary solutions that can't even be used at ALL. What is this crap, why is there a new season why?????
Where's the science and the facts and all the other good stuff. This is just a generic, gay version of Mythbusters, they can try all they want. But truth is...no matter how much crap they blow up, it means NOTHING
Just do us all a favor and stop airing this waste of time.

Unknown said...

NEW EPISODES?!?! I have not read one thing positive about this show, who green lighted this pile of SH!7?

Now they are trying to reinvent the roll cage with concepts like huge air bags on the outside of the car and long polls that come out from the bottom of the car, and a grappling hook to help stop the car that comes out the trunk! how is anything they do realistic? Its not even amusing, no personalties just bland boring people.
I would watch if they would have a fight with AIDS needles.

But why haven't you talked about the other idiotic things Smash Lab has done, like the unsinkable car that turned out more 'unsinkable' and less 'car'? What about the rocket trailer? Where the hell did Discovery find these people? The woman's shrieking and gyrating gets on my very last nerve and somebody needs to tell the old guy that the hipster hairstyle isn't fooling anyone. Comparing this ridiculous rip-off to Mythbusters is an insult to Jamie, Adam and the build team. SmashLab is just half a step short of "Ow! My Balls!" and presumably aimed at that demographic. For the love of all that is good and right, kill it with fire, take it off the air, or at least move it to a slot after How It's Made so I can turn off the TV, blissfully unaware that it still exists.

UNlike most of the viewers, I didn't type in "Smash Lab Sucks"... I used smash labs annoying for my search and seen this wonderful blog. I gave it 2 episodes and agree 100% with every blogger here. For some time it seemed to go off the air, but came back. Well, needless to say I gave them another chance again. SAME results, the only difference is they took away the title of scientist for the girl, and replaced the hippy with a stoner named Gadget. He actually has some fabricating skills but they go about the show the wrong way. I want to request a fair scientific experiment for the crew at Smash Labs and if they agree, I will crown them the best show on Discovery. Maybe they can attempt to see to race a semi and see how the human body reacts. They have 4 chances.

Add me to the list. I feel some consolation from the comments here and my faith in the future of humanity (at least scientifically) is restored.

I have a solution though - this show might work as a drinking game. Take a shot for both acts and comments of sheer stupidity.

Cheers!

You guys are mainly just a bunch of haters, and whiners... Mythbusters and smash labs are 2 completely different shows.

I bet 99% of you are Hippocrates and actually watch the show... thus giving it good ratings.. Why do you think they are in season 2 on way to a 3? Thanks to you guys who still watch it... but try to downsize it at the same time.

Mythbusters is about busting myths... Smash labs is about coming up with extraordinary ideas and practical inventions to save lives. Its obvious they arent the same.. When was the last time mythbusters tried to save lives?

First, you have to remember there is 168 hours in a week. And unless you just want more re-runs of Deadliest catch and dirty jobs that you already seen a million times... then you ought to stop complaining.

Seriously... 90% of you are prob mythbuster fans and are just jealous or haters because a show is potentially just as cool.

I hope you reconsider your attitudes because all of you are out of line.

Leroytirebiter said...

yes, because strapping outriggers to your car or installing a harpoon gun is "practical"

I am more than proud to announce that I have only watched one episode (the whole aerated concrete fiasco), and it left such a nasty taste in my mouth that I decided to subscribe to this blog to see if others felt the way I did. They do. Not at all practical, this show.

In the aerated concrete episode, they were so pleased that they were able to "save lives" by stopping a run-a-way car, they completely disregarded the lives of the people that would have been pelted with the effing concrete on the other side of the divider. Yeah. Screw those people. Their lives don't matter...we got to smash a car to hell. Cool.

This is rubbish.

By the way, it is more than feasible that this show does NOT have good ratings. Networks often buy a certain amount of episodes, and will run trash shows, because they've already paid for the episodes. Not uncommon. Especially with a network like Discovery.

That Guy up there... How do you think he found this? I know how I did... You don't just type "Smash Lab sucks" into Google for comedic relief, do you? He obviously is crazy, there's nothing else to explain it... Unless... Let's spend $100,000 on a machine that will emit waves specifically engineered to make crazy people... less crazy! But, wait... even that would be more practical than slinging rocket motors onto a trailer, or dropping a boat out of an airplane.

This show really does suck. And no... we don't watch it. That would be really stupid... kind of like typing "smash lab sucks" into Google only to defend it's idiocy.

to add to my previous post.. i agree %100. Smash labs is not mythbusters. They are not the same. I do agree with the few and say that they are both different. But I feel that anyone who made a resemblence was stating that MB uses science, while SL uses the sense of a 5 year old. My 9 year old son, agress that most of their gueses will not work.

Terrible show.

Anonymous said...

This show is great. I like mythbusters but those acting like it is the holy grail of shows are IMO crazy. Adam is a TOOL and so annoying and kari is useless as well. Plus they are really reaching for "myths" to test and most of the stuff they do one can easily realize at the start it will be "busted" or one can simply go online and read up on it which NO DOUBT the mythbusters guys do anyway.

From what I have seen of Smash labs (4 episodes) 3 of the things they came up with would be practical in the real world.

Unknown said...

The new cast is an improvement but a lot more work needs to be done with this show. Mythbusters are already far ahead with a developed cast and a good reputation. However the smash lab people got off to a veryyyyy bad start and are going to have to work hard to give a good impression.

Smashlab Sucks!!
I don't care that it might be a mythbuster ripoff. I like mythbuster, but i think sometimes even adam and jamie don't do their job the right scientific way, but they re at least fun to watch!
Smashlab is just stupid. The hosts don't know what theyre doing and the whole show is an insult to everything great scientists and researchers have done.
The token girl is even more annoying than those three fags because she talks too much bullshitt! And she is not even that pretty. Especially not when she;s talking.
I watch smashlabs for a good laugh but i mute sound because all of the stupid talk and I can't stand the fact they're demolishing all these beautifull old cars for no purpose:(
I also think this show is a waste of money. Money which could be used for making other great shows even better or for charity. I bet a whole african country can eat proper for a week with one smashlab episode's budget. Please discovery cancel this show before all clever people stop watching your wonderfull channel!!!

Anonymous said...

Wow, I was seriously kinda scared to see what everyone was saying about SL. I was thinking that maybe I was the only one that thought this has to be the worst show ever on discovery. I've been a huge fan of Discovery ever since the motorcycle mania days (with spin offs like Monster garage and biker build off) and have since been slowly turned off by this channel. Every one loves Mythbusters, (me included) but SL is truely sad.

They are trying to come up with new ideas for problems that have already been solved (like trying to stop a car.. every heard of gravel ramps or sand filled drums?) but to add insult, they give us a 2nd season?!?!? Please Discovery, please stop paying these people making this show..

Because of this show, I've found some good stuff on History channel.. Modern marvels is pretty good..

Anonymous said...

Too all who hate the show.. TWO WORDS FUCK OFF!!!

The show is awesome and brillant.. IN NO WAY IS IT A RIP OF OF MYTHBUSTERS..

Learn you TV.. Mythbuster is trying to prove if a myth is true, Smash Labs they try to find a solution to a problem..

SO FUCK OFF

ramiles29: You are the epitome of the type of person we all suspected enjoyed such vapid drivel.

njbillt said...

hey ramiles29. We all found this blog by Googling something like "smash lab sucks". I'm just wondering, how is it that you found this blog?

Unknown said...

Ramiles29,

1) Name 5 things in your opinion that disprove Smash Lab as a copycat of Mythbusters...be careful there are many scientists sucscribed to this blog

2) Name 5 things Smash Lab accomplished that were truly scientific and VIABLE (dictionary.com if you need to look up)

3) Why are you on the anti-fan website? Shouldn't your shit be on the pro-side? Look at what you posted - a bunch of blather with no backup, no reasons, facts, proofs, theorems, just high school level opinions (which are like assholes, we all have one)- actually poorly written. I believe you are a lower IQ douchebag who likes info common/simple and easy-for your-brain to digest, like Gerber baby food, minus the minerals and substance/nutrients.

4) What value does Smash Lab bring to the world? Name 5 things and you cannot use the following words:

a) Scientific

b) Has a useful goal to be achieved

c) Intelligent

d) Well planned and executed

e) Backed up w/ secondary experiments and/or initial small-scale tests to ensure scale-up results

f) Accurate

g) Precise

h) Sellable/Viable/Useful

i) Customer driven, i.e. ideas coming from the fans moreso than producers

j) Customer loyal (hence Discovery wants to copycat to dilute the already loyal market to Mythbusters?)

k) Entertaining (how can failure in execution, poor measurement in results from immeasurable parameters for conclusion, poor acting, and low level IQ/science - hell Mr. Wizard's World for 5th graders has more science backup/proof/results!)

L) Epic - this show is over after this season. Mythbusters will never ever go off air and actually should leave Discovery and upgrade, now that greedy Corporate execs want more. Typical greed vs. science.

m) Emotional/Deep/Growing - Smash Lab actors are as deep as a pie pan. The entire Mythbusters crew are nutty, funny, Kerri is fucking HOT, and they are all artisitic/creative and operate as a team, even having meetings, check-ins, splitting up, competing. Lots of depth in all directions where skills are put to the test and evolved. Kerri is an artist and they have her doing explosion/robotic/chemical/electrical projects. How cool that we can evolve unlike the stagnant, shallow, and discombobulated (see dictionary.com) junk that you call good, like the other "asses of the masses" you are a part of. Hey, you want to buy some bridge stock? Maybe some snake oil?

Solutions:

1) Write better when you attempt to enter the realm of the elitist intelligence community.

2) Get facts straight, don't just blab/cry- back it up (answer my Q's above please - we would all like to see).

3) Join the fan club, not the anti-, or keep bugging us and validating the truth.

4) Take some science and engineering classes to maybe shed some light on fact, not crappy, flashy, unresulting attempts at solutions/value for society.

5) Maybe pray or meditate to get clarity and direction on how you can improve yourself and your lack of perception.

Please, all, let's help this poor cat out. We all know that we hate this show for emotional reasons, so I spent a few minutes to lay out specific points. We all need to dig deeper and get rid of this cancer on TV. Please extrapolate on my ideas, add comments, and thanks for being a member!

You know, it's not that it's a "rip off" that bothers me, though it is...and come on, man, it is. Just like House and Gray's Anatomy are very much rip offs of ER. The difference is, they have decent writers and decent actors, or at least their actors have chemistry, and that's my problem: Smash Lab's horrific (emphasis there) execution.

Lots of shows, musicians, artists, films etc., are rip offs. Originality is a tough thing to come by anymore, just don't suck at what you're ripping off.

I also Googled "Smash Lab sucks," and here I am. I was just cruising the Internet to make absolutely sure that this travesty of television is really, truly, gone. I see it is not on the "shows" list at Discovery.com
I am an engineer in real life--I really am. I do not play one on TV. I am an engineer in the real world, everyday. In my opinion, everything the yo-yo "engineers, scientists," or whatever titles they posted behind their names, had no chance of working in the real world.
Why do I care? Because these clowns were giving us real E's a bad rep. I am sure that the few people who actually watched this travesty of television came to believe this is how engineers practice their profession. I would be relieved of my duties (very quickly!) if I conducted myself like these pinheads. I play with very expensive "toys." If I mess up people can get hurt, or worse.
Discovery, make sure this abomination of television never, NEVER, makes it to an LED, plasma, or CRT unit. Never again!

The scary thing is that Discovery has just started the series here in South Africa about a month ago and some people will have to go through all the episodes. Not me, after watching 2failed "experiments" which looked like some school play going wrong, I had enough. What a load of crap, I think I would have more entertainment watching paint dry. Please Dicovery, take it off our screens!!!

It's actually a rip of a UK show called Brainiacs, which is similair in format but is deliberately all about explosions and bad science. It's a lot more fun when it's intentionally that bad.

tjohns said...

I have only subjected myself to this torture once, and was it bad. They spent the whole episode putting rocket thrusters on a van to see if it could propel...the van. Basic physics would tell you that this would work.
So after 50 minutes of "suspense", they do a final pre-test check, only to have one of the rockets accidentally fire off. Then they spend the next 10 minutes describing how good it was that no one got hurt. Then the show ends. pathetic

Smash Labs Sucks,

Here's why

Hmmm Let's try to solve an everyday problem, with a "stupid dumb ass" idea and we'll pretend it has a some scientific basis.

I've watched a few show's just for a laugh, have they ever actually come up with a real solution ? I think not.

Discovery stop this rubbish.

I have only watched a few episodes of SL and i couldn't agree more. The idea of them being college dropouts is extremely plausible.

For example, the train hitting a car show, im not sure if it had a title - but i digress, they thought by having a forward facing airbag they could 'save' a car. I saw this an immediate thought came to mind, won't the train just keep pushing the car? This idea OBVIOUS to a teenager, isn't as obvious to 4 'qualified' adults.

At this moment of my writing i'm watching the burning building elevator escape method type show - again unsure of it's correct title. But basically their trying to find a better way of escaping burning high rises. Both teams of 'intellectuals' can't seem to comprehend the implementation of their ideas into a real life situation. One team suggest having a huge shaft with which a cart can be placed into - descending building at a slow stead rate. This idea has a cart built for one resident of a high rise. Saving one person, hardly cost effective.

The other teams idea is to have a free falling cart slowed at the bottom of the building by magnets, this produces a huge number of obvious flaws; the huge g forces caused upon the inhabitants of this 'life saving device' would surely cause internal bleeding. This also has the same flaw as the previous team - how could you get more people on the 'life saver.'

In conclusion this show must of recruited these hosts from the job center, rejects of the intellectual society they claim to be from. Honestly - it just frustrates me that these people think their 'inventions' can help people when they are so deeply flawed, if these people get paid for this, I should be able to replace them at their own job at my current education standard... I'm aged 16.

It's two years later, and this show is still on the air. Even if they canceled it, it's still burning a hole through my television screen. I just saw an episode where these "professionals" came up with a briliant way to get a van out of a pile of snow: burn it with a jet engine.

Seriously, I have all the scientific credentials of a turnip and I knew this was not going to work.

I saw the episode about the airated concrete two years ago, and it always seems to be the same thing every time. Someone makes an invention that works quite well for a given task, then these guys try to do a better job with insane, stupid methods. I mean, never mind the insult this does to me, but what about the people who spend years of their lives and thousands--maybe millions--researching the REAL solution?

The only entertainment I can derive from this is the sick satisfaction of a bunch of morons failing at any task presented to them in a spectacular way. But, really, my Schadenfreude is far to fickle to tolerate it for more than a few minutes, at most.

I can't agree more.
I was watching a episode just now, (coincidently about coating the building for explosions)

and all i thought was:
"I am pretty sure this already exist, but what do I know,I'm not a scientist"

and now reading this....
Ow my god, it sucks more then i thought it already did.

Just listen - "Let's take pillows to protect car against RPG".

fuck yeah. be honest, tell us you just want to explode something.

I just watched this on netflix and googled "smashlab idiots" to see if anybody else felt the same way. A couple minutes of planning and thought and the first 3 episodes would realize they don't need to exist. I don't think I can take any more of this.

Black Puma said...

The fact that nearly everyone here came here by Googling ''Smash Lab sucks'' is pretty awesome. x3

I couldn't agree more with what has been said in this post, and in the comments. The subjects of the episodes are unnecessary, as many of the ''problems'' they provide, already have a solution. Then the experiments.. Ugh. Well, the blast wrap episode is a classic example of their useless experiments. They spent over 85% of the episode testing an already in-use product.

Then the presenters.. Nick and the one with the glasses, they had nothing to add, but at least they were cute.

The others guys, and the so-called ''scientist'' we're just plain arrogant and obnoxious. Every time the girl opens her mouth I have to bite my tongue not to shout at the TV to stop the annoying insecure mumbling and lame jokes. You're on TV for crying out loud, work on your vocal presentation.

The other guy, well.. He's just too arrogant. He just radiates smugness throughout the entire show.

At least shows like ''Brainiac'' present themselves as a parody show. It's funny, and nobody expects it to be 'actual science'.

The show is an abomination. Period.

I found this blog like most other people, by Googling "Smash Labs Sucks". I have just viewed the car smash protection episode

Without a doubt a lot of money has gone into SL, pity it was wasted. With a little bit of effort. It could have complemented Mythbusters, the MB crew sticks to Myths, the SL guys could check out real world smashes, collisions, explosions etc. It needn't be funny, just scientific, and not so dopey, and it would help if we saw the guys in the show actually doing the stuff, not just drive loaders. In the show bios it says they are fabricators and engineers. I didn’t see much of either, what they did do they sucked big time. 1.The build of the aerated concrete forms was crap for both examples, and they didn't put any effort in to fixing them 2.evidence of engineering was minimal, no information on location, number or placement of the accelerometers, 3. no control collision with the unprotected concrete barrier, etc I could go on. At least with Prototype This the guys are real(but they needed a chick), and you saw them doing the work. They didn't always succeed, but everything is on show seemed real. I won’t bother setting my PVR for the rest of the SL series, hard drive space is too valuable to waste on this.

The editing is poor with lots of 'smash events' only partially shown, the sideways movement of the camera is irritating, the supposedly high resolution (1080i) comes out more like 800 x600 and it is repetitive (what! don't have enough video material to show so you repeat clips?) there's too many edit-cuts to another scene and camera angles are often wrong so that it seems like a cameraman is circling the scene of interest so that the viewer cannot get the 'layout' of the scene.

If Discovery or anyone else wants to make a clone of the ole' Mythie then there's a far better way and I know how.

Robert.
